The Wine Fashionista Mary Orlin has named my wine stoppers and wine gifts in her “5 Best Wine Diva Holiday Gifts”! While I think my wine stoppers and other wine accessories make great gifts, it is always nice to hear it from someone else! I met Mary this summer at Falls Park Farmer’s Market where I sell my unique gifts! Here is a link to read her post and see what other awesome wine gifts she has stumbled across! And don’t worry, if you still need a Christmas gift I still have plenty in stock! I still have a couple days to complete custom orders as well.

Butterflies

IMG_0519[1]

For some time now, I have been making pendants with real butterfly wings from the Sertoma Butterfly House in Sioux Falls. I purchase the butterflies from the Butterfly House after they have naturally deceased. Preserving the wings between glass or resin is a very tedious process. I can’t touch the wings with my fingers because the wing is so fragile. The wing has feather-like scales that will come off with the oils in fingers.

I have always loved butterflies, so I hope you will enjoy my designs! With care, these pieces of jewelry will last forever! I will add these individually in the near future. Thanks for looking!

Date Night Fun!

So my husband and I spent the evening together tonight and decided to try something new and fun! We like to find activities that we can do together that does not involve the normal dinner and a movie.  I had come across this idea on Pinterest and decided it was time to try making wine bottle candles, which is a candle placed under a wine bottle with the bottom cut off. Sounds pretty simple, right?

Jason put together the cutting contraption and I picked out a few bottles (out of my 300++ collection!!)  It took a few tries to get the hang of it, but we ended up with about 8 keepers by the end of the night! To start, we made a score line on the bottle wherever we wanted the bottom to be. We then placed the bottle in boiling water and then ice cubes (and back and forth) until the bottom cracked off. Sometimes, a crack formed elsewhere in the bottle ruining the whole thing! After the bottom is cut off, the bottle needs to be sanded and polished for a clean and unsharp edge.

All in all, we had a fun evening. Even Jason will admit to this! Now all I need is candles to go underneath the bottles!!

Torchworking

This past weekend I had the opportunity to play with fire! This is something I have fallen in love with! I originally took a class last May on torchworking. I never thought I would like it as much as I do. However, I do not have the space in my house to set up an area where I can use an open flame. But, I have chosen to be friends with the right people! My friend Adam has a shop just outside of Canton and he has helped me set up a small area where I can practice using fire to make some glass designs. So, this past Saturday Adam’s fiance and I did just that. While none of our pieces turned out quite as well as my pieces did while I had an instructor helping, it was still fun to get to play around. I can see it is going to take a lot of practice, but it is something I will enjoy practicing!

This is a close up image of me working on making a glass pendant. The glass in the flame is melting to form a dome on the front side of the pendant.

This is the first glass piece I made during a class last spring. None of my designs have turned out this nice since then, but hopefully in the future they will be just as awesome!
